The Center for Open and Distance Learning (CODL) of the University of Colombo serves as a dynamic hub for expanding access to higher education through flexible, technology-enabled learning. Established in 2011 as the Virtual Campus, the Center has continuously evolved to meet the changing needs of learners and the growing demand for inclusive, high-quality education.

Today, CODL is dedicated to providing opportunities for individuals who are unable to pursue full-time university studies, enabling them to engage in academically rigorous programmes through open and distance learning modes. With a growing portfolio of external degree programmes and professional development initiatives, the Center supports over 2,000 students, fostering lifelong learning and career advancement.

Through its commitment to innovation, accessibility, and academic excellence, CODL plays a vital role in broadening educational opportunities and contributing to national development, while strengthening the University of Colombo’s position as a leading institution in higher education.

  • 2011

    Establishment of the Virtual Campus of the University of Colombo – Coordinating Center as a self-financing center.

  • 2015

    Commencement of BSc. in Financial Engineering External Degree Programme & B.Sc. in Electronics & Automation Technologies External Degree Programme

  • 2019

    Renamed as Cyber Campus of the University of Colombo, expanding its vision to support part-time education.

  • 2023

    Commencement of B.Sc. in Environment, Development and Sustainability External Degree Programme & B.Sc. in Biotechnology and Microbiology External Degree Programme

  • 2024

    Renamed as the Center for Open and Distance Learning (CODL) of the University of Colombo.
    Commencement of B.Sc. in Applied Chemistry External Degree program & Applied Data Analytics External Degree program.

  • 2025

    Commencement of BSc. in Molecular Biology and Bio-entrepreneurship Degree program, Certificate Course in Early Childhood Development & Capacity Development Workshops.
